NYRR Dash 10K: 40:34 / 6:32

Chip Time: 40:34 (PR)
Pace: 6:32
Rank: 75/4520
Age Grade: 66.2%

Today was certainly the most optimal weather conditions to race. I know I started too fast and further analysis from my splits displayed inconsistency. Fortunately, I was able to acquire my personal best for this distance. My last 10K PR was a year ago and that was 2 weeks after my 3:07 PR at the Long Island Marathon. I don't think I've done anything drastically different this time around. I continue to log 37-45 miles a week. However, I ran 4 miles at 6:55-7:00 minute pace on Friday night. Maybe thats the reason my legs felt fresh? Or maybe I just had a good day? Also volunteering at the mini 10K and seeing how well the lovely ladies competed was inspiring coming into this race.

At the start of the race, again I don't know what to expect as the 10K is the most difficult distance to race IMHO. Ben of CPTC inquired my time goal, and my response was anything around 41-42 would seem normal as that's my 10K range. As Ben and K (5th in AG) rolled along Harlem Hill, I find myself trying to use a rabbit and that speed demon happens to my former teammate P of Adobo (He's probably one of the most consistent guys to train with). I followed him till mile 3 and I was off on my own.

Cat Hill was tough but afterwards it was smooth sailing and pushed a little harder once I saw my teammates and friends. I knew I had a chance to grab the PR till the last .2 miles. In the end, I was relieved because I think after all those back to back to back marathons, was detrimental to my speed and recovery. In addition, past results made me very unconfident coming into the race. But after the Brooklyn Half and today, I'm hoping to be in the upswing of things and become more consistent.

One thing for sure, I have to desist from being so critical of what I could've done better and start to enjoy the results (I have to say I'm ecstatic with this PR!) Most importantly, I have one more race to qualify for 2010 NYC as my next NYRR race will be one those halves. Essentially, I'll focus on outside NYRR races, a cross country ultra later this month and a tune-up marathon before NYC.

Furthermore, it was good to see my team at the Reservoir Bridge as well as xtina of CPTC and CT of UA cheering on as well. Major thanks!

Splits:
01: 6:27:78
02: 6:27:12
03: 6:33:23
04: 6:37:32
05: 6:46:39
06: 6:22:78
.2: 1:20:09

Cheers,
Moz
